green beauty buys #2

Hey everyone! Remember my green beauty buys post from a while ago? Well I am back to share with you more eco-friendly products I’m currently loving! I bought/received these products over the holidays, meaning I’ve had a good few weeks to test them out and tell you why I think they’re so great! Read on…

Korres Quercetin & Oak Regimen Kit

This 5-piece kit includes a travel-size day cream, night cream, face serum, eye cream and foaming cleanser. It is said to be “clinically proven to dramatically reduce wrinkles while increasing skin elasticity and improving overall skin texture.” Since I’m all about age-prevention (hey, it’s never too early to start), this was a wonderful purchase to test out the products. The night and eye cream have been my favorite from the kit and I will definitely consider purchasing the full-size when I run out. These Korres items are great for sensitive skin and don’t contain all of the parabens, sulfates, phthalates, etc. that we so commonly find in the average face product.

Aveda Balancing Infusion Oil

I was introduced to this product at a facial I recently had at an Aveda salon and couldn’t stop thinking about it afterwards. The conclusion? – I was back at the salon just a few days later to purchase a bottle. This oil has a very invigorating yet relaxing, spa-like scent that I can’t get enough of. In fact, the fragrance alone is enough reason to buy this item, in my opinion! Because the oil is very light-weight, it absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave your face looking like an oil slick. I like mixing it in with my Korres night cream (mentioned above) each night for extra hydration. (This is definitely an investment-worthy purchase for winter if you suffer from dry skin)! Bonus – you feel like you’re at the spa every time you use it. No wonder I find myself reaching for this little bottle multiple times a day…

Tarte ‘Lights, Camera, Lashes!’ Mascara

After reading countless positive reviews about this [paraben-free, sulfate-free, cruelty-free] mascara, I didn’t hesitate to put it on my Christmas list. Now that I’ve been religiously using it for several days, it’s safe to say that the reviews don’t lie – I am in love with this product! It creates the perfect balance of volume and thickness. The only downside is at $19 a pop, this isn’t an item I can justify paying for every 1-2 months when it’s time for a replacement.

What have been some of your favorite beauty buys as of late?

P.S. Are you in the market for new makeup brushes? – For the rest of January, Sigma Beauty is offering 10% off any purchase! (Enter code 0112XJML at check out). My favorite is the vegan Mrs. Bunny Essential Kit!

green beauty buys.

If you’re a loyal reader of SimplyChic, you know I am in favor of sustainable acts and eco-friendly products. After recently discovering that our skin absorbs up to 60% of what we put on it, I decided to make the switch to using products that utilize as many naturally-derived ingredients as possible, in addition to cruelty-free products and ones that support going green.

Have you looked at all the ingredients in the products you use daily? If what you see listed is an ongoing list of words you can’t pronounce, I suggest switching to a more natural counterpart. In my quest to go green with my beauty buys, I’ve decided to share with you my favorites in the process. Consider this installment one of many to come!

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush in “Dollface”

The lovely pink hue of this blush goes on with the perfect amount of pigment and truly lives up to its “12-hour” title. The just-right rosy look this blush creates suits the majority of skin tones. What’s even better? It’s free of parabens, sulfates, and phthalates… among other potentially harmful ingredients. While the price tag is a little steep ($25), this long-lasting blush is worth every penny! (And you know it must be true if it’s coming from a frugal gal like myself! ;))

Sigma Beauty Mrs. Bunny Essential Kit

Although I am a little biased being that I work for Sigma Beauty, there is no doubt that this is one of my favorite brush sets of all time! This 12-piece kit features cruelty-free brushes using 100% synthetic (and unbelievably soft) bristles, making this a certified vegan-friendly product. What’s more, it contains all of the brushes you need for daily makeup application. Plus, just how darn cute are the colors, in addition to that convenient brush cup holder? You simply can’t pass this one up! (Also available in a 7-piece travel set!)

Love & Toast Sugar Scrub in “Dew Blossom”

While browsing the aisles at Target, I was originally drawn to this product because of the adorable packaging. But what sold me was when I took a whiff (delicious!) and then saw it met all my earth-friendly requirements. This scrub works wonders for sloughing off dry skin (especially during these cold winter months) and its delightful aroma transports you to a spring garden. Makes for a great stocking-stuffer! (Money-saving tip: I purchased this for $6.99 at Target – four dollars cheaper than listed on the brand’s website)!

 Lavanila – “The Healthy Deodorant”

Most deodorants contain aluminum-based ingredients which are absorbed into the skin, potentially increasing the risk of cancer. While the verdict is still out on that, I’d rather not take any chances! Recommended to me by a co-worker, I recently purchased this all natural deodorant in lieu of my not-so-natural Secret one and couldn’t be happier with the switch! It is definitely one of the better smelling deodorants I’ve come across in a long time (I went with the standard ‘pure vanilla’, but it is available in four other appetizing scents as well). Find it at your local Sephora!

Alba Botanica Even Advanced SPF 15 Moisturizer

The main feature of this great-smelling moisturizer is what the brand refers to as its “marine complex,” or better known as sea moss extracts. This moisturizer is pleasantly light-weight and absorbs quickly, something normally hard to come by in moisturizers with SPF. It’s great for everyday use and wears well under foundation. Available at Target or Whole Foods Market.

trend to try: blunt bangs

I’ve been seeing the thick bang look all around the web and in magazines recently. Around this time every year I am always enticed by the style.  I was daring last fall and gave it a go, but not quite sure if I want to roll with it again this year. What do you think – trend to try or trend to toss? I’d love to know your thoughts! :)

eco-friendly obsessions.

While a few of these products are a bit on the spendy side, I strongly think they’re worth every penny! Not only are each of these products fabulous, but they’re earth-friendly, too …and now just how eco chic is that?!

1. Burt’s Bees Garden Tomato Toner – $12. This 99.4% natural toner made from tomato, cucumber and parsley extracts helps to clean and tighten pores while leaving behind the subtle aroma of a sweet tomato garden. A summer beauty essential!

2. EcoTools bath sponge – $1.99. Made from 100% recycled material, this bath pouf works great for daily cleansing and gentle exfoliation.

3. Tarte Smooth Operator SPF 20 Tinted Clay Moisturizer – $36. The perfect product for lightweight, cruelty-free coverage formulated without parabens, sulfates, mineral oil or synthetic fragrance. A fab foundation alternative for the hot summer months. {a Sephora best-seller!}

4. EOS lip balm – $2.99. Paraben- and petrolatem-free, this 95% organic shea-butter and Vitamin E rich lip balm provides the just-right amount of moisture without the unnecessary, harsh ingredients.

5. Origins Clear Improvement Charcoal Mask – $21. This active charcoal mask helps to clear pores while clarifying and reviving the skin’s surface. {an Origins top seller!} Enough said.

6. Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day basil-scented soy candle – $9.99. 97% naturally derived from vegetable soy wax and essential oils, this earth-friendly candle provides 35 hours of basil-scented goodness and comes in a re-usable jelly jar. I can’t resist this luscious summer scent.

7. Aveda Brilliant Damage Control spray – $15. Protects from UV, thermal and combing damage for the hair. Made with certified organic aloe, camomile and calendula, this is a summer pre-styling hair must-have. {an Aveda stylist pick!}

What are some of your favorite eco-friendly products?

pleasantly-priced polish.

My new go-to nail polish – Essie! It dries very quickly and outlasts any other polish I’ve ever tried… and the color choices are endless! The catch, however, is that they are a little steep in price (about $8/bottle), BUT do you think I would actually pay that much? Of course not! This is how I’ve gotten six bottles for $16 (a $48 value!) — Trade Secret and Ulta frequently offer promotional sales of “buy 1, get 2 free” on select colors (usually “out of season” colors)… but who cares when you can get THREE bottles of this fabulous stuff for the price of one?! Steal of a deal! Not to mention, all Essie polishes are DBP, toluene, and formaldehyde-free – always important! :) So go ahead – buy yourself a bottle (or three)! You won’t be disappointed you did!
