The first indication that fall is approaching is no doubt the appearance of the infamous PSL on the Starbucks menu. (I’ve already had two, by the way). Aside from my cravings for all things pumpkin, fall gets me giddy about slouchy sweaters and broken-in boots. It has me ditching bright + bold shades in favor of a pared-down palette with classic colors like black, brown, nude and navy. Seen above are just a handful of items I’m swooning over this season which have made their way to my wardrobe wishlist.

What are your go-to clothing pieces for fall?

P.S. Remember this post? Well I conquered the cowardice and said so-long to 6 in. of hair this past week!

get the look: dotted denim.

If you glance around any clothing store right now you will likely see a plethora of patterned pants. 80s revival anyone? Personally, I am not quite sold on the floral or tribal options just yet, however, I will admit I’m a fan of the polka-dotted denim look! Here I’ve tracked down six choices in a variety of price ranges. How much are you willing to spend on the trend?

splurgeShopbop – $190 // Madewell – $190

spendJ.Crew – $98 // Gap – $69.95

saveTarget – $24.99 // Forever21 – $22.80

To get the biggest bang for your buck there is always the option to simply transform a pair of pants you already own with this tutorial by A Pretty Penny! Now that’s what I’m talking about – reduce, reuse, recycle!

What are your thoughts on the dotted denim look and printed pants trend — are you willing to give it a go or will you be sticking with your solid slacks this season?

springing ahead.

spring fashion 2013

The holidays are over and I am more than ready to say so long to winter and welcome spring with a warm embrace (literally!). Here are some of the items I can’t wait to wear upon operation snow melt:

1 – Denim shirt dress. I love the versatility (and simplicity) of chambray — this particular piece can be worn as-is, or paired with a cardigan and a colorful belt.

2 – Messenger bag. Because everyone needs a pretty pastel bag for spring…

3 – Skimmers. Talk about ankle eye candy! These skimmers are the perfect mix between capris and skinny jeans, plus the variety of colors and patterns allow for endless outfit options!

4 – Tortoise cat eye sunglasses. One word: timeless. (Or perhaps “purrrfect.” Too far? I thought so.)

5 – Essie nail polish in “Where’s my chauffeur?”  A little bottle that packs a big punch of bright & bold.

6 – Floral bib-like necklace. A fun statement piece to dress up any outfit, such as item #1.

7 – Striped tee. Stripes, stripes, stripes… I can’t get enough! For a fun combo, I’d pair this number with some floral skimmers.

8 – Polka dot pleated shorts. Similar to stripes, I am a sucker for all things patterned and these shorts are no exception.

9 – Pastel lace-up flats. Just plain cute. (Also available in black and teal)

What items are you excited to sport come spring?

office attire basics.

Outfit details: Necklace – $4.50 @ Steeple People’s Surplus in Minneapolis; Express button-up – $3 @ Clothes Mentor in Minneapolis; Mossimo belt – $1.99 @ Goodwill in West St. Paul; Vintage clutch – $5 @ Sophie Joe’s Emporium in St. Paul; Antique ring – $12 @ Treasure Chest Antiques in Waseca; Gap silk pants – $4.98 (on clearance, orig. 59.95) @ Gap; Isaac Mizrahi heels – $14 @ Encore Consignment in Mankato. *Nail polish – Essie in “Overboard”

When you want to dress up your usual office attire, simply resort to the basics of black and white; it’s the easiest way to exude a touch of class in the most simplistic of ways.  Add some bold accessories and some bright nail polish (and/or lipstick!) to keep it from being too “blah” and more along the lines of “ooh-la-la!” Happy Monday! :-)

a word on winter wardrobe transition.

Outfit details: Merona cardigan – $4.98 (on 75% off clearance) @ Target; Necklace – $8.80 @ Forever21; Gap dress – $7.97 (orig. $69.95) @ Gap; Merona tights – $5.60 (on 30% off clearance) @ Target; Xhiliration boots – $15 (new) @ Clothes Mentor in Edina.

I mentioned in the latest SimplyChic post my urge to ditch my winter wardrobe and dive into the vivid colors that spring fashion naturally brings. Since there is still snow on the ground here in Minnesota, I can’t exactly pack away my over-sized sweaters and wool socks just yet…wah, wah, wahhh. I’ve made the compromise to continue to sport my warm-weather gear but slowly adding a hint of spring into the mix at the same time. Pops of color and bold patterns [in small doses] creates an ideal balance. Fun-colored tights, bright nail polish, and floral accessories is an easy way to make a smooth transition into next season’s trends. Now my only question is… can it be spring already?!

spring is in the air… err, on the runway.

Okay, so it’s not exactly spring quite yet. There are still about 6 weeks left until the season is “officially” upon us, but after seeing all the spring runway trends, I’m already longing to rid my closet of cable knits and dark shades in favor of  brights colors and bold patterns! Here are some spring lines I’m loving:

monday musing: colored pants.

What started out as a top trend this past fall will no doubt carry over into the spring… colored pants! Such an easy yet unexpected way to add a pop of color to your wardrobe. I say bring on the brights!

gold shoes with a side of mom jeans.

Outfit details: Necklace – $6.80 @ Forever21; Mossimo boyfriend tee – $8 @ Target; Merona cardigan – $4.99 @ Goodwill in West St. Paul; Caché jeans – $10 @ Elite Repeat Consignment in St. Paul; Gap flats – $12 (on clearance) @ Gap.

You know you’re wearing mom jeans when they just about surpass your belly button and have the word “spandex” on the tag. (Or can I just call them high-waisted jeggings and you can forget I ever said anything about owning mom jeans). Regardless, these jeans are by far one of the most comfortable pair I own so I will continue to sport them proudly! May I add that they also make for great holiday get-together pants as an excuse to eat copious amounts of food, not that I would ever do that…

On another note, I was smitten when I recently came across these metallic gold ballerina-inspired flats for a mere $12 (orig. $40) at the Gap! A bit of gold is a fun and easy way to glam up any ensemble this time of year.
