a word on resolution-making (and achieving).

original image source unknown

Twenty thirteen has made its way here which means it’s time to set a few goals for the new year! Some people think that making resolutions are pointless for the obvious reason that the odds of actually sticking to them are not very likely, more times than not. This can often be attributed to the fact that the resolution is too lofty, or the person simply doesn’t hold themselves accountable to it. The easiest way to combat this lack of execution is easy: make resolutions that are specific and actually attainable, then set a plan of action to achieve them. Write it down, put it somewhere that you’ll see everyday, and share it with others.

What resolutions/goals are you making [and sticking to] for 2013?

face to the book.

After toying with the idea for more than a year now, I finally created a Facebook page for SimplyChic! I figure it’s my best bet for getting myself to revert back to creating posts on a regular basis. That said, if you want updates on new SimplyChic blog posts but don’t want to subscribe by email, “liking” my page is what ya need to do! And while you’re at it, you could follow my obsessive pinning on Pinterest for your daily dose of DIY ideas and recipe inspiration (61 boards and more than 3,300 pins – I am not messing around folks) or even take it one step further and follow me on Twitter, too, if you’re a real social media junkie. Just an idea…

Thanks for the support! :)

SimplyChic is officially one!

I started this blog last year without a concrete concept of what it was going to be, other than a creative outlet to keep me occupied while my fiancé embarked on his one-year deployment overseas. In the end, it helped me land my current job (who would’ve thought blogging could do such a thing!) and ultimately evolved into a place to channel my passions, thoughts and ideas, while inspiring people in the process. Rey is back from the deployment now, yet here I am, still blogging away with no real desire to bring SimplyChic to a close like I had initially planned.

Long story short, thank you to all those out there who have been loyal readers for the past year and have taken something away from this blog. I hope you’ll stay with me as I continue this journey of sharing all things simply chic!

recap of a lovely day + a pumpkin muffin recipe.

As I mention in yesterday’s post, I’m currently obsessed with all things pumpkin. No, seriously. Pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin bread, pumpkin scented candles… you name it, I gotta have it. Late Saturday night I let my cravings get the best of me and I baked pumpkin muffins which made for a perfect breakfast (paired with some coffee, of course) to enjoy on this lovely Sunday morning! (Find the delicious muffin recipe on Smitten Kitchen).

Since it was such a beautiful fall morning,  I couldn’t resist a long bike ride. I love taking the time to reflect, and what better way than through nature and the changing seasons! Check out a few of the images I captured:

How was your weekend?!

Stay tuned for some fun posts coming to SimplyChic this week! :)

sustainability for snail mail.

Remember this post from a while back about snail mail where I encouraged you to send a card or letter to a loved one? Well, first off – did you? If not, you should! And now you can do so while being green! I’ve recently come across a few eco-friendly snail mail items that I simply had to share :)

First up – Night Owl Paper Goods. They have a whole range of green greeting cards (along with other stationery-type items) made from 100% reclaimed and recycled cotton, or sustainably harvested yellow birch wood – all of which boast very fun and unique prints!  Here are two of my faves (out of many):

Second, Waste Not Paper note sets. They are made of 100% recycled cotton and envelopes made of at least 30% post-consumer waste paper. Available at Barnes & Noble in various designs!

Third, the Green Inspired brand sold exclusively at Target. All of the products are made with soy-based ink and use chlorine-free processing for whitening the paper. Not to mention they are very affordable! I bought a few packs of their blank cards so I always have cards on hand to send.

Lastly, the USPS “Go Green” stamp collection. The stamps offer tips for conserving resources and helping maintain an ecologically healthy environment. What a fun and simple way to raise awareness of going green!

So now not only can you make someone’s day by sending a little snail mail their way, but you can also do so while being green and promote sustainability in the process! :) Simply chic – sustainable style!

snail mail sentiment.

With the constant rise of technology, snail mail seems to be a distant memory and thing of the past for the majority of us. But I think we can all admit how fun it is to randomly receive a letter or card from a friend or loved one (in lieu of the ever-so-typical email/text/Facebook message, etc.) Am I right or am I right?
With my fiancé being overseas, we have both been making an effort to take advantage of the old school pen-and-paper days of communication. I just don’t think an email will ever measure up to the sentiment you get from a card or letter. That being said, I encourage you to make someone’s day by taking the time to send them a little love via snail mail for a change just to let them know you’re thinking of them, or to simply wish them a great day. It’s the little things in life…

Follow the signs

… garage sale signs that is!

Today while driving in my residential area, a bright yellow sign that read, “SALE this way —–>” caught my attention. Naturally intrigued, I followed that initial eye-catching sign which eventually lead me to a small sale in a little garage. Despite it’s dismal and rather disappointing appearance via curbside, I decided I had nothing to lose since I was already there. Five minutes and $5 later, I found myself walking away with a brand new (still in the box) pair of Steve Madden flats ($2), an Xhiliration blazer with a darling floral pin attachment ($3) and a Gap tank top ($1)!

Moral of the story? When you spot a sign, see where it takes you! You never know what could be in store… or in someone’s garage ;-)
